Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay instantly became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful tool to engage in political activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get interested in production for television journalism. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash from one of the juries. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
